Dear Friend,

I’ve seen some great leaders and true public servants come through City Hall over many years. These men and women have built our beloved Dallas into one of the most dynamic, recognized and livable cities in the world.

There is one candidate for Mayor of Dallas who not only has the potential to continue this legacy of visionary leadership for Dallas, but has already demonstrated a capacity for getting results: State Representative Eric Johnson. I support Eric for Mayor because I know he can provide transformational leadership for this city.

Eric, the son of a Dallas police officer, has worked for everything he has achieved. His story of success, from C.F. Carr Elementary in West Dallas to the Ivy League and right back here as an attorney and State Representative for District 100, is a uniquely Dallas story. He is a product of the very best of this community — great schools, his church, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and many individuals who encouraged him to reach his full potential.

Eric reflects Dallas. But he is not a city insider. He is not part of one faction or another on the City Council. He is not beholden to the usual way of doing business. And he has never been afraid to take on entrenched interests. When Eric first began his career in public service, even though he was running against an incumbent who was under indictment (and later convicted), he upset many in his party’s establishment by even stepping forward to run.

And thank goodness he did, because Eric has been an effective, energetic and reform-minded voice for Dallas in the Texas House of Representatives. He was pushing for a robust investment in prekindergarten when most at the Capitol were willing to do the bare minimum. He has been a leading voice for building trust and accountability between law enforcement and the public. He’s made it easier to prosecute real estate fraud, and he has been one of the Legislature’s greatest advocates for protecting voting rights and increasing civic participation.

Some of Eric’s bills focused specifically on the needs of Dallas and his legislative district, while others had a broader statewide impact. But to pass any of them, he had to work within a power structure at the Capitol that was controlled by the other political party. Eric listens to all viewpoints, but he never abandons his principles. This collaborative approach is not only why Eric has attracted support in this campaign from well-known Democrats and Republicans, but it’s also why he is the right person to lead a city government that is increasingly fractured.

During my public service, I always paid close attention to the details of budgets and other nuts and bolts of government. I am confident that Eric will excel in this regard. Not only does he have a Master of Public Affairs from Princeton University, but he specializes in municipal finance as an attorney.

Eric is a uniquely qualified candidate for Mayor at this point in our city’s history. His rise from modest circumstances in Dallas is inspiring; his record is accomplished; his style is unifying; and his expertise is unrivaled.

I’ve seen the impact that great leaders can have on this city. Eric Johnson is a great leader for Dallas.

Sincerely,

Mary Poss
Former Acting Mayor of Dallas
